She was hired by IBM and worked there for 45 years until 2002. Her work helped computers understand programs written by humans. In 2006, Allen won the Turing award, considered the highest honor in computer science.
What they said about her
Frances Allen, a computer scientist and researcher who helped create the fundamental ideas that allow practically anyone to build fast, efficient and useful software for computers, smartphones and websites, died on Tuesday, in Schenectady, N.Y. https://t.co/AcmmDsHIbS
she and her fellow researchers spent decades refining a key component of modern computing: the “compiler,” the software technology that takes in programs written by humans and turns them into something computers can understand.https://t.co/jeQyd4jzVU
A great loss to the world, Frances Allen was a pioneer in helping computers understand what humans wanted them to do, through her work in compilers and was the first woman to win the Turing award. Thank you and rest well. https://t.co/Mh6d01MGQ1
